There has been a huge rise in the popularity of bamboo over the last few years, with many companies and on-trend brands beginning to utilise the material for a variety of textiles, homeware, and hardware products.
The Times newspaper recently reported an article regarding Bamboo cricket bats.
“Scientists at the University of Cambridge have created a bat made from bamboo that they say is not only more effective but also better for the environment than traditional willow.
For nearly 200 years the blades of cricket bats have been fashioned from willow, but a study suggests that bamboo is, in fact, a superior material — cheaper, more sustainable and potentially capable of producing more entertaining cricket.”
The Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology reported that “there is a shortage of suitable willow, and manufacturers often have to throw away a large proportion of the wood because of imperfections. By contrast, Moso and Guada, the two most suitable types of structural bamboo, grow abundantly in Southeast Asia and South America. They mature twice as fast as willow and because the structure of the laminated material is more uniform; less material is wasted.”
As well as having an over-arching benefit over willow, many other factors make bamboo such a successful and versatile material:
It Is Strong and Durable
Bamboo is often nicknamed ‘green steel’ and with good reason. Its astounding strength and lifespan have resulted in construction companies choosing it as their material of choice, with entire homes being built out of the robust plant.
It Is Safe and Hygienic
Bamboo fibres are naturally anti-bacterial and work as an antimicrobial. Bamboo shoots are used as a treatment for several health issues and diseases, as well as it working as an excellent first aid to help heal wounds.
It Has a Positive Impact on Communities
Bamboo production and manufacturing helps small communities in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America, that need social and economic stability. Bamboo sourcing help to sustain the traditional industry and creates new, well-paying, stable jobs for the local people.
It Is Good for The Environment
Bamboo has many positive impacts on the environment. It absorbs 2x more carbon dioxide than trees and generates 30% more oxygen than most plants and trees. It is also the fastest growing plant on earth and can grow to full size in 3-4 months compared to trees which can take 30+ years.
